The non-human primate (NHP) Housing Consortium
Mission Statement: We are a community of professionals focused on advancing captive non-human primate (NHP) housing that meets the animals’ needs, encourages the expression of species-typical behavior, optimizes their welfare, and promotes their participation in high quality biomedical research. These needs must be carefully balanced with those of husbandry and research. Housing refinements will be accomplished through research, advocacy, and engagement with all stakeholders.
The Importance of Terminology: We have deliberated over the terms “caging”, “enclosures” and housing in relationship to captive NHPs. The terms “cage” and “enclosure” seem to lack the more comprehensive focus on socialization and environmental enrichment, so we prefer the term “housing” for that reason. The consortium will work tirelessly to encourage and share methods to promote quality housing for NHP.
Vision Statement: Excellence in nonhuman primate housing designs that affords superior animal care, veterinary care, research operations and promotes animal welfare.
